Saxenda is the brand name for liraglutide. Originally developed as a treatment for type-2 diabetes, liraglutide acts as a mimic for human glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1). Your body releases GLP-1 when you have eaten, to create the feeling of “fullness”.
Liraglutide acts upon the same receptors as GLP-1, meaning you will get the same feeling of fullness even after less food. This means eating less, which in conjunction with diet and exercise, can lead to weight loss.
Saxenda is administered daily - simply inject into your upper arm, abdomen or thigh once per day. The amount you inject will change, starting low and adding progressively more to reduce the likelihood of side effects, and to maintain the highest chance of completing the treatment.
